7 Reasons why print marketing is still important

In a world where technology has quite literally taken over, digital marketing has become an increasingly popular option for a lot of companies. Now, I'm not saying there is anything wrong with digital marketing. In fact, I love it and think all companies should adopt a digital marketing strategy. But with the sudden spotlight upon digital and online promotion, more traditional ways of marketing can be overlooked and in particular print marketing has taken a back seat. But print is definitely NOT dead. In fact, it is quite the opposite.

Print marketing consists of a huge range of things like posters, leaflets, brochures and direct mail. It comes in all forms and can help to promote a range of products and services. Being a print and design company, we work with many clients to create effective print marketing. We see firsthand the impact that this type of channel creates for our customers which is why they keep coming back to us for more printed material. Despite this though, a lot of people think that print marketing is old fashioned. I am here to tell you that it's not and that it can actually make you stand out from your competitors.

7 reasons why print can give you a competitive edge

1. It is more personal

Customers love to feel special and valued by companies. There's something about print marketing and in particular, direct mail or a letter, that just feels that bit more personal than other types of marketing. A few weeks ago, I received special offers and vouchers from Tesco in the post. Every day, I receive emails with similar discounts but there was something about receiving these vouchers in the post that made me feel a bit more valued.

And when you make a customer feel more valued, you can expect to gain customer loyalty and retention.

2. It grabs attention

Printed materials can really grab people's attention. With print marketing, there is a lot of opportunity for great design that will look attract people to your material.

As well as this, I don't know about you but I have definitely noticed a decrease in the amount of print marketing that comes to my house or that I see in general. Due to this, I pay a lot more attention to print marketing than other types of marketing. For example, when I am handed print marketing, such as leaflets or brochures, I always have a good read of it. Compare this to email though and I don't always look at each and every promotional material that comes my way.

Print marketing is attractive and different which can mean customers engage with it more than they would with other marketing.

3. It gives you a competitive edge

Print marketing seems to have slightly decreased within some company's marketing mix. Due to this, incorporating more print marketing into your marketing plans will give you a competitive edge, simply because it is done less so it stands out more when it is done.

4. It allows people to disconnect from technology

With technology literally taking over everything, I always seek times where I can unplug from everything and enjoy some time away from my phone, laptop and other devices. More people are doing the same and actively choosing to disconnect from digital media every now and then. Print marketing is refreshing in a digital-obsessed world. It gives your customers the chance to unplug and really digest your marketing.

5. Print marketing builds reputation and credibility

To me, print marketing shows that a company has put a bit more effort in and because of this makes them appear more trustworthy and serious about what they do. The appearance of a company's credibility is usually the deciding factor on whether a customer will choose to use your services or not. So try print marketing to really impress your customers.

6. Print opens up clever opportunities to advertise

Print opens up so many creative ways to advertise and promote yourself. For instance, you could design a booklet to look and open up like an envelope or creating an interactive paper wheel which turns to show different text. Creative things like this can really grab your customers' attention and encourage them to engage with your material for longer.

Print marketing isn't just leaflets, brochure or flyers etc. It's also posters and printed signs. How many times have you noticed a shop sign or a shop poster whilst in a car or walking? I do it all the time! In fact, when it comes to thinking about companies that offer certain products or services, I tend to think about things I have seen. For example, someone I know asked me if I know of any office spaces around Sheffield and I told him a few based off signs and posters I had seen outside of buildings near where I live. This can also work for places that you already know. Often I will walk down a High Street and notice a huge special promotional sign, such as '30% off' which will entice me into the store when I wasn't planning on going in before.

Having print marketing is very visual and can reach customers in numerous places.

7. Print is not just momentary

Unlike a lot of other marketing, print can have an effect for a longer time. This is simple due to the nature of it. When I receive a takeaway menu, vouchers or a brochure, for instance, I will keep hold of these until I need to use them or hold them for future reference. Whereas other forms of marketing are often based on an immediate call-to-action.
