What is SEO?

Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) is what makes your site appear on search engines like Google, Bing and Yahoo. Having a website is vital for all businesses to succeed and compete for customers. The matter of the internet is: most people search or do research online for products and information they need. Never has it been more important to have a great website that attracts your customers.

Having a great website means that once customers are on your site they are more likely to use your services. However, a great website doesn't automatically attract customers to your site in the first place. That's where SEO comes in. To make sure your website appears higher on search engines you need to optimise your website correctly so that search engines like Google know your site is relevant for specific website searches (e.g. Italian Restaurants Sheffield).  The better you optimise your website, the higher you will rank for relevant keyword searches and the more customers will find your website.

The actual specific algorithm to optimise a website for search engines is a huge secret. However, there are known ways you can optimise your website so that search engines increase your ranking. The one thing to keep in mind with SEO is to build your website for customers and not search engines. Google favours websites that are relevant to users, give users a great experience and have good content (text and images). Google does this for one reason: they want to make the user experience as good as possible because they want to keep their users happy so they continue to use Google.

SEO can be complicated but we have made a simple infographic to introduce you to SEO and some easy things you can do to boost your website ranking on Google.
